A simultaneous homage to and extension of the classic 1973 Old and in the Way album, Old and in the Gray reunites three principles from the original group (David Grisman, Vassar Clements and Peter Rowan) with banjoist

/vocalist Herb Pedersen and bassist Bryn Bright. The ghost of departed Old and in the Way founder Jerry Garcia looms heavy, though not in a negative way: Garcia's palpable humanity and amicable spirit can be felt in every note.
Old and in the Gray, like its predecessor, is not a hot-pickin', hard-driving blue-grass group. Rather, they illuminate the warmth and soul that first drew them to bluegrass via relaxed, understated performances and playful, joyously unfettered interplay. By doing so, they have crafted a refreshingly honest gem. It's the ultimate context for the eclectic Rowan, as his more cosmic impulses are grounded by the earthy sincerity of his bandmates. And does anyone play fiddle like Vassar Clements? His exploratory zeal and creativity continues to become ever-more astonishing.
Mostly consisting of vintage repertoire, Old and in the Gray smoothly integrates a wide range of material. The rollicking take on "Honky Tonk Women" harkens back to the original group's cover of "Wild Horses," while "On the Old Kentucky Shore" and "Barefoot Nellie" show they got a way with the traditional stuff. A cynical sigh could be expressed when yet another cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty" is cut. Yet this exquisite version, with Pedersen's lonely vocal and delicate guitar front-and-center, makes the old warhorse seem new again. In the end, that's what this project is about: rediscovering bluegrass's potential for direct, touching emotion.

Als Ergänzung zur 1973 erschienenen Compact Disc "Old And In The Way" kam 2002 „Old And In The Gray" auf den Markt. Die Disc brachte 3 der Original-Mitglieder, David Grisman, Vassar Clements (inzwischen verstorben) und Peter Rowan erneut zusammen. Unterstützt wurde das Trio neu durch den Banjospieler/Sänger Herb Pedersen sowie die Bassistin Bryn Bright.

Der Geist des verstorbenen Jerry Garcia (Grateful Death)spukt noch immer auf diesem Werk 'rum, allerdings nicht im negativen Sinne. Garcia’s fassbare Menschlichkeit und sein freundschaftlicher Geist wird in jeder einzelnen Note spürbar.

Old and & in the Gray ist jedoch, wie bereits ihr Vorgänger, kein übliches Bluegrass-Outlet. Die Jungs versuchen einfach, das 'rüberzubringen, was sie einst selber zum Bluegrass hingezogen hat: Dessen Wärme und Seele. Die Performance von Old And In The Gray ist entspannt und schafft eine spielfreu-dige, erfreulich ungehinderte Wechselwirkung. Dadurch hat die Band einen wichtigen, ehrlichen Dia-manten geschaffen.

Die kosmischen Impulse eines eklektischen Peter Rowan werden durch die bodenständige Seriösität der restlichen Bandmitglieder aufgefangen und schlussendlich zu Peter’s ultimativem Kontext ge-macht. Und gab’s je einen besseren Fiddle-Player als Vassar Clements? Sein forschender Eifer und seine Kreativität erstaunen hier nur noch mehr.

Die CD offeriert eine grosse Material-Bandbreite, wenn diese auch vorwiegend aus altem Stoff be-steht. „Honky Tonk Women" geht auf das „Wild Horse"-Cover der Band zurück, während „On the Old Kentucky Shore" wie auch „Barefoot Nelly" aufzeigen, wie die Gruppe mit traditionellem Material um-geht. Zynisch könnte man höchstens beim Cover von Van Zandt’s „Pancho + Lefty" werden. Aber Pedersen’s einsamer Gesang und das delikate Gitarrenspiel im Vordergrund scheinen aus einem „alten Warenhaus" ein neues zu machen. Und darum geht’s am Ende bei diesem Projekt: Das Potential der Bluegrass Musik in Hinsicht auf direkte, berührende Emotion wiederzuentdecken.
