Die CD zählt seit Jahren zu meinen Favoriten. Ich höre immer wieder gerne rein - und sei’s nur, um wieder einmal herzlich Lachen zu können.
Musikalisch gesehen bewegt sich dass Trio auf riesigem Gelände: Da gibt’s nicht nur Twist (Arkansas Twist), Rag (Steel Guitar Rag), Polka (Guitar Polka), sondern auch Rockabilly (Alley Boogie, Rockin’ Daddy) oder todtraurigen Nummern, die absichtlich völlig falsch gesungen werden (The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine). Doch auch Country Standards wie etwa „My Bucket’s Got A Whole In It" wurden nicht vergessen und selbst Jazz (Stompin’ At The Savoy) zollen die 3 Musiker aus Memphis, TN, ihren Tribut.

The Country Rockers formed around 1986 and were noted for their special
brand of roots music as well as for their considerable age; at the time,
Baird was in his 60s and Farnham in his 70s.
"It's like we lost a chapter of American drumming," says Easley.
"He went back so far, his style of drumming was from a different era - from
the '20s into the '30s he developed that style."
The trio made two albums for the French label New Rose (now Last Call) -
1988's "Free Range Chicken" and 1990's "Cypress Room" - and had a loyal
following in Europe.
"Free Range Chicken" - released domestically in 1992 on Telstar Records - is
perhaps the Country Rockers' finest hour, an unusual mix of western swing,
country, rockabilly and surf music highlighted by the hillbilly bop number
Arkansas Twist, a polka cover of Wipe Out and the Hawaiian lull of My
Happiness, sung by Farnham.
"Just like the Beatles, we'd let (Ringo) do one song a record," says Easley,
who adds that My Happiness will most likely be the Country Rockers track
featured on a coming 20th-anniversary New Rose boxed set.
Though the band retired in 1994, when Farnham moved to Maryland, they
reunited in 1996 for Sweden's version of Lollapalooza, the Lollipop
Festival. It was their last show.
"He played better behind me than any drummer I can remember," says Easley.
"He never let me down."

„Free Range Chicken", das 1992 auf Telstar Records erschien, ist wahrscheinlich die beste Arbeit des Trios. Das Album besteht aus einer Mischung aus ungewohntem Western Swing, Country, Rockabilly und Surf Musik. Für Höhepunkte sorgt die Hillbilly Bop Nummer „Arkan-sas Twist", eine Polka-Kopie von „Wipe out" sowie das Hawaiianische Schlaflied „My Hap-piness". Alle 3 Nummern werden von Farnham gesungen. „Genau wie die Beatles liessen wir Ringo 1 Stück pro Platte singen", meinte Easley und weist darauf hin, dass „My Happiness" wahrscheinlich auf dem Box-Set zum 20-jährigen Bestehen von New Rose dabei sein wird.
Die Band hatte sich zwar 1994 zur Ruhe gesetzt, als Farnham nach Maryland zog, doch 1996 kehrte sie für eine Reunion ans Lollipop-Festival in Schweden zurück. Es sollte die letzte Show der Band sein. Easley’s Nachruf betr. Farnham: „Er war der beste Drummer, den ich je hatte. Liess mich nie in Stich."
Ich kann allen Traditionalisten, Hillbillies und Rockabillies und selbstverständlich allen anderen Interessierten die CD „Free Range Chicken" wärmstens empfehlen.
